There was only on battle axe guarding a planet and it took out 3 of mine and it was still not destroyed. And how do you actually invade the system??? And i always seem to lose control of the senate in mid game when i switch to the next gorvernment type. ne tips on how to keep control. Also what is best to build first at earth for ships and social projects?? i would b most grateful if ne of u could answear my ? i only got the game a few dyas ago l8er

(1) BattleAxe is ATT2, DEF5 - not good at killing otehr battleaxes. Use a more aggressive ship to kill the defender (or take lots of losses). See the Combat Simulator (go Forum, and click on Simulator on left side)
(2) Once there are no defending ships, move the transport onto the planet - the invasion screen will open.
(3) Keep your morale over 54% (roughly) - then you will win the elections. Pay special attention when changign government type. (Quick fix: drop taxes or ship people off planet. Lots of slow fixes to morale problems...)
(4a) For ships, start building colony ships and a scout or two. Build constructors whenever you can. Build starfighters to increase your military credibility, and perhaps a battleaxe per planet for some defense.
(4b) For social, start with soil enhancment, habitat and banking (these are zero maintenance, so always build them). Consider Entertainment Networks (morale) and Research Labs (research and influence).

Enjoy the game, and feel free to ask for more tips...

A ship in orbit gets significant bonuses and battleaxes are tough little fellows, just send plenty of warships.

To invade, build a transport, put troops into it, send over to the enemy star and just ram it into that star after you have destroyed everything orbiting that star. You will then be presented with four self explanatory invasion options.

Hope this helps.

There may have been planetary defenses assisting the ships in orbit. Nonetheless, you must dispose of the orbiting ship(s) before you can assault the planet. Do this by assaulting the planet with regular military ships. Once the orbiting ships have been removed, you must use a transport or combat transport to assault the planet.

A combat screen will appear that shows the attack and defend bonuses and how many troops are on each side. Hit the spacebar and see if the dice roll in your favor.

To take out orbiting battleaxes, you need frigates at least to take them out one-on-one. Else expect many losses for lesser ships. Employing quantity vs quality is also not a good idea as the defender gets better with each victory via experience.

As mentioned, being in orbit gives bonuses. Planetary defenses (despite its ingame writeup stating otherwise) helps ground troops and not orbiting ships.
