When planets defect from majors, do they join the I-league eventually, or do some of them remain independant?

So far I have only seen planets defecting from a major do one of the following, and always immediately:
- join another major
- join the I-League
- join the Fundamentalists

I have not seen any defecting planet become independent.

It can happen under very unusual circumstances (there used to be an example of the Arcean Empire fragmenting into two seperate civilizations on the main page around six months ago). There is practically no way for this to happen accidentally, though. It's always the result of deliberate action by some other player.

As I recall, one of the stated possible problems that can occure if a race's homeworld is captured or destroyed was the fragmenting of their empire.

I've never seen this happen. Maybe it could happen in some of the original versions of the game 1.0, or 1.01 maybe but I dobut it can happen anymore.

I've seen it recently in 1.05. The Dregs broke up to create another empire, the Dregnin Alliance/Federation (or something) after some kind of civil war event. I didn't touch them but they had very poor morale.

The new empire was a minor.

Independance can occur with civil wars. When a civil war occurs (due to lots of planets with low morale) a message screen appears and each planet of that empire decides seperately whether to join the new empire or remain with the old. Sometimes no planets change which can be confusing. This can happen to any major.

Paul.

I had a game this past week on 1.05 where the Arceans were down to one system. I had just installed a 3rd starbase in that sector and maxed out its culture modules when I got a screen saying that a seperatist group of Arceans had broken from the "regular" Arceans and were now called the Free Arceans or something like that. The strange thing was that even though they had created an independent society they didn't get their own system as happens with the I-league. They were simply in charge of the original system. I don't know what became of the Arceans but the Free Arceans flipped over to my culture about two months after the event.

If they only had one system before, the Arcean Empire itself was destroyed. Free Arcea basically took over the government (which would suggest that it should have remained a major race, but there probably isn't anything in the game to check if the whole empire rebelled against it's government rather than a civil war dividing the Empire in two).

I had a similar thing happen with the Torians the other day, but I checked the planet and it said it was controlled by the Torian Federation. I looked all around for the other Torians and they weren't anywhere to be found.
