This is something I noticed also, with less planets I always run a surplus of money rarely lowering the slider from 100% spending but when playing on maps like gigantic/abundant I am rarely able to keep the spending slider over 50% due to huge amounts of cash going out to planets.

jn64,

You interested to join the Fellowship?

The Fellowship currently has the most number of active Maso players (me, vincible, Gengsta) and we would love to have you join us.

Yes I'm definitely interested many thanks. My current alignment hasnt been too active recently so the thought has come to mind I have to confess. Joining ranks with a Higher Purpose and Motivation would be way cool indeed

( By the way - renaming player erases all the current scores right? Or is there some other trick to it? My current handle is kind of low profile and far from anything decent in the aspiring Fellowship league...but if renaming means losing all your scores so far then it just will have to do I guess )

Great! It would be fantastic to have your participation.

You can relink your serial number with another player name but all your old games will no longer show. So it's kinda lost. I would suggest you keep them.

5 Maso wins far from decent? You are a funny guy.

jn64,

You can change your nickname to something else without penalty. Just go to http://www.wincustomize.com/ Link and click on "Edit Account". There is an option there to "Change Your Nickname". This will not affect your scores, just what shows up on the forums. You will still submit your games to Metaverse under the same Player name you do now.

My Player Name is "Barry Light", but I changed my nick to Theoden to fit in with the Fellowship!

Hope this helps, and hope you join the Fellowship!

So... has anything important changed in 1.09+? Other than the score, obviously.

Hmm... lots of good stuff in this thread. I'm going to have to read it more carefully.

Interesting that some can actually get the AIs to trade with them. It must have been my starting picks holding me back.

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I notice that you can set two alien races to Genius instead of Incredible and still have the game count as Masochistic. That means there will be two races who will pay decent cash for your techs. Do other people do this? Is it considered insufficiently difficult for true S&M fans?

I've never done it. There's a discussion of this in the Masochistic 1.04 thread though. (There are a couple more useful tips there too, but this thread is better.)

In the discussions I've read, the non-incredible AI's have a tendency to fold quickly to the incredible AI's.

Yes, that's right. I used to play 3Incrs & 2Gens when the 1.05 version just came out to ease myself back into that level. Note however that scoring is based on individual AI difficulties so this would score lower.

Yes. Without Incredible influence bonuses that the other 3 has, they can get absorbed quickly. But those two Genius AIs will be very easy to rush and if the Maso player successfully absorbs the 2 Genius AIs quickly, the game is almost won.

I always play with all ai's on incredible. I tried once to set the Yor incredible and the others as genius, and the Yor ate them all. I mean, even the Yor beat the pulp out of lesser ai's on incredible.

My two Maso wins have both been against 3 incredibles and 2 geniuses and in both cases it seemed helpful. They always survived a fairly long time and made my economic situation a lot easier.

Playing against at least one genius is a relief on maso because, if nothing else, you can trade them something for money, and money is quite useful.

it is what it is.

Trying a large 5x maso game, and i gotta say, I am not really enjoying it very much. I am not that far into the game, and if the AI can be this far ahead of me now, I don't see how there is much hope.

I got a good start, have met 3 majors and two minors. One of the minors was kind enough to send a freighter my way, but the majors didn't waste much time declaring war. I am just now rolling ut a couple of fighters, only to be met with a number of corvettes from the 3. The bank is not good, the resources are being gobbled up, and it just an all around PITA right now.

I think I might try a Tiny/Maso/Common game tonight. Can I get an idea for a good govt and abilities pick? Also some always dos and don'ts. And yes i've read the whole thread, but I was hoping for a little more.

Thanks all,

B

Good luck, B, on your upcoming game. Diplo, Speed, and Soldiering are some of my favorite picks. Populists (or pacifists? I can't remember) are a good party for maso.
Keep everyone else at war, stay neutral if possible. Let's see ... Culture resist, culture boosters, morale boosters ... anything like that will help.

Will speed be very relevant on a game in a tiny universe? It is after all 5 picks. I might even stay in the first sector if I get a good start.

I wouldn't pick speed in a tiny universe.

Diplo is essential, and I almost always get the +60 pick, and often combine that with Populists for +80. Aside from that, it depends on your playing style.

Well my playing style in most games like this are to out tech everyone. But at maso, you can't do that. So other than that, any other suggestions?

Don't get discouraged when your twenty techs behind, or when the AI is sending Dreadnaughts against your frigates. Keep a cool head and you'll be surprised at how well you can extract yourself from these messes.

Thats the hard part. I just basicly finished the colonisation phase. I have 9 planets over 6 sectors.

AI Techs / AI Planets
Majors: 13/6, 23/10, 17/5
Minors: 14/2, 4/1

date is 2182

About my only claim to fame in this game, is the early steal from the Yor. They are kinda locked into the corner (bottom left), with the Acheans, the two minors, and myself. During the rush phase, the Yor and I both grabbed a star in the same sector, both had high starting PQ (20+). having the foresight to send all colony ships out with 200m pop, I built a trasport instead of a colony ship. By the time it was done, I was able to load 200m on the trasport (iirc) and send it over a couple of squares to the Yor star. nabbed the system. I did this, because of what I was reading here that said sharing a system with an Incred Ai is = giving them a system.
Not this time ya mechanical asshole. But it seems I started the damn thing without a Yor approved exaust hose, and now all my sectors have some form of Yor pollution in them. This would not be be that bad, but the Drengin came from no where and started demanding systems, and of course I am now at war with them too. And somehow, the Acheans decided they just didn't like me. I don't even remember getting the message I was at war with them.

So thats where it sits. A powerfull Achean to my NW, a damaged Yor to my SW, The gagging drengin that i have no idea where they are at, and two minors that are ahead of me.

Hard to keep a head up when I am use to having a bit more of a commanding lead in my sectors by this time.

At least I managed to get out of the red BC.

I am thinking about trying to get the Acheans to accept peace, but they also have a huge influence in ALL my secotrs, even the one that are several sectors away from any of theirs.
